Cloudy day today. We “tender” at a place called Icy Straits today. Tender means we go in by little boats as the big ship can’t come into the harbor. We easily go past the tourist shop center they have built for the cruise ship passengers and hitch a ride into the small and real town of Hoonan.
The lady that picks us up is Catherine who teaches school in town. She tells us about how she got to Alaska so 20 years ago, about the town and its struggles and her Siberian Husky who is in the back of the truck. So interesting to meet people from here.
We wander down to the fish canning plant where we heard that 100’s of bald eagles come if they are canning that day. No canning today, but we see a sea lion throwing around a fish he has caught. Gulls and a few bald eagles come to watch and pick up scraps. We speculate that he is trying to tenderize it or just having fun! As we watch the Sea lion, we see humpback whales back by the ship blowing! These are the same whales that during the winter will migrate to Maui where we see them calving and breeding.

We take a hike too around the point before heading back onboard. A pretty full day of walking and exploring. We return to a fantastic meal with our table and a quality singing and dancing musical show in the theater after.
