June 6, 2009 Slept in Soap Canyon outside north Rim Grand Canyon at 6500 ft. and cold. Thought we needed a second blanket! And we are In June, right?
Got up early and headed down to Page to check out a few things and head to Antelope Canyon – an amazing place we had seen photographs of. A slot canyon on the Navajo Nation, we traveled with a Navajo guide named Richardson. A very nice guy who is studying Mechanical engineering at the University in Tucson and home for the summer to help run the extended family business. He says he wants to become my coaching client! Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon, a narrow cut in the sandstone where the water and sand runs thru. The light coming in from above is amazing in the red, orange twisted rock. We got many great photos as you can see.
Then we drove for a few hours to reach Monument Valley, again in a Navajo Nation Park. It is the one in all the Westerns and there is even a view place called John Ford’s Point. We drove the 17 mile loop, 2 hour drive before sunset and then looked back to see the full moon had risen behind us!! Very spectacular to see the full moon over Monument Valley. Sounds like a full day, it was!
June 7, 2009 Today Gerrit was the one who got us early, 5am, to get spectacular shots of the shunrise over Monument Valley. We visited the brand new “View Hotel” built and operated in the Heart of Monument by the Navajo people. I t does have the most spectacular view I have ever seen. Because of our experience with the first night of full moon we decide to head to Bryce Canyon for hopefully more great shots at this time of month.
