Waking early and see the Majestic mountains and look for campsite at Signal Mountain right on the lakeshore. We meet our neighbors from across the road and have a glass of wine with them. It is so beautiful. We rush off to the Grand Teton classical concert Festival held in Teton village - very well done.

We try to move up in the campground and wait around to see if the people by the lake are leaving. Then lunch at lodge, mountain of nachos that could feed 4! Then we work on the computer for the afternoon, sending you guys out some pictures. Gotta do it sometime.

Friday, July 10, 2009 Wake early and go on hike around the very popular Jenny Lake and up to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point. On the way we see a mom deer and baby as well as some black marmots, the size of large house cats and lots of pika, small guinea pig like creatures, and squirrels. We go the evening ranger talk and
after some dinner to see what’s left of the long summer evening sunset over the mountains and moon rise! at Jackson Lake Lodge
We go for a bike ride that is listed in the Park literature as 8 miles along the Snake River. We start on a dirt gravel road that gets worse. And we keep hoping it will improve. Gravel is EXTREMELY hard to bike in!! We think we must be half way on the loop so we plan to go all the way around. Bad idea. We later discover we were only 1/4 of the way! Finally after up and down bad tracks we get to the road after 4 gruelling hours!! We are grateful to get a ride back to our car on the road. It turned out to be 18 miles, not 8. At least we got our exercise.

Wake early for another ranger hike up to 2 ponds
where we see some water birds including an osprey, a very large brown colored sand hill crane with a huge wing span. We decide to leave to go to Yellowstone tomorrow. Do some laundry and more computer work. Myia gets some time on the porch of the lodge at Signal Mountain watching the view and relaxing. She really loves this view and this park! Reminds us a bit of Yosemite and quieter, larger, and more peaceful. Sooo spectacular.

Decide to head toward Yellowstone, the Teton’s big brother National Park that connects with “Little” Tetons to the south. Yellowstone was the first National Park created in the world! All others over 6000 now in the world were created after this idea took hold! It is so very much larger and full of thermal features and wildlife we hear. Arriving early we get to Old Faithful to see it erupt at 7:20 am. And erupt it does! shooting 140 ft into the air and with spectacular features like a fountain. It reminds Myia of the Bellagio water fountains in Las Vegas except there was no music! And it lasts 3-5minutes and erupts consistently every 80-90 minutes.
And we were so impressed with the Old Faithful Lodge. We take a tour. Built all of raw timber and at least 3 stories high – 75 ft in the peak of the open ceiling. It was built when the railroad and others were trying to coax rich East Coast tourists out to see the “wild West” and was meant to impress them with all the luxuries of the day, electric lights, in house plumbing, steam heating. And the large space in the lobby was left open for after dinner dances and a place to see and be seen with open 2nd and third story balconies to look over. We went on a hike around the area to see the other geysers, deep blue and colored hot pools. On the way we saw a quiet grazing bison enjoying the natural heat and green grass and wildflowers. We saw Old faithful a 2nd and Gerrit a 3rd time before we had a nice lunch at the lodge of bison chili and sautéed trout with corn bread. We stopped by several other lovely smelling sulfur pools and bubbling mud pots before coming upon Huge Lake Yellowstone and the Lake hotel. It has an elegant feeling and we were lucky again to be treated to a String Quartet playing in the lobby. As they began to play the thunderstorm clouds we had been watching came in and it rained hard with lightening for awhile and then turned sunny again in the space of 45minutes!
On the way out we saw people looking at something by the road and we saw bison and a large elk lying down quietly in the tall grass. We then headed to a good night’s rest.

Go on early hike with ranger and learn about the history of park and see some animals in the wild, like moose! We see an osprey in the tree which we have not seen before.
